Gaetano Scamarcio

Full professor of Physics since 2002, he graduated in Physics in 1985 and received the PhD in Physics in 1989. From 1989 to 1990 he has been a research fellow at the Max-Planck-Institute für Festkörper-forschung, Stuttgart, DE, and in 1992 a visiting scientist at the Walter-Schottky-Institute, Garching, DE. In the period 1994-1996, in 2000 and 2001 he has been a visiting scientist of Bell Laboratories, Lucent Technologies (formerly AT&T), Murray Hill, NJ (U. S. A.). In 2006 he has been invited professor at the University of Paris 7.

His research interests are in the fields of: quantum cascade lasers and their applications, near-field microscopy, optical, vibrational and transport properties of nanostructures, spectroscopic techniques for real-time monitoring of optoelectronic devices, optoelectronic sensors for mechatronics, biosensors based on organic field effect transistors. His research activity is documented by more than 250 ISI publications, including papers published in Science, Nature Communications, Scientific Reports, PNAS, and 9 filed patents. His publications gathered > 5600 citations with a Google Scholar h-index of 43 (SCOPUS h-index of 41). He has given more than 60 invited presentations including plenaries and keynotes at international conferences and workshops. Awarded researches programs comprises contracts funded by European, UE, ESA, Italian, MIUR, MAP, CNR, INFM as well as regional agencies and industrial projects for an overal budget > 50 Meuro.

Gaetano Scamarcio is a member of the Board of Experts for the Italian National Research Program (PNR 2021-2027).

Since 2018 is a member of the editorial boards of the Institute of Physics journal "Journal of Physics - Photonics" and the Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute (MDPI) journal "Sensors".

A selection of professional activities includes: President of the Apulian Technological District on Mechatronics (MEDIS S.c.ar.l.), 2011-2014 (previously member of the administrative board since 2007); Coordinator of the PhD School in Physics, since 2010; Director of the Bari's unit of CNR-IFN (previously LIT3 Regional Lab of INFM) since 2005; member of the Scientific Board of Tecnopolis CSATA (2004-2008); member of the Scientific Board of Centro Laser s.c.r.l. (2002–2005); evaluator of scientific and technological programs for the Italian “Ministero dello Sviluppo Economico (MISE)” and for the Scientific and Technological Parc of Tecnopolis CSATA; external evaluator for: European Commission (FP7 - FET OPEN 2009-17; H2020 – INFRAIA-INFRADEV-CLUSTER 2014-15, 2016-17; Horizon EIC - 2021); Agence Nationale de la Recherche; Science Foundation of Ireland; provincia autonoma di Bolzano; coordinator of the University Diploma Course in “Material Science” of the University of Bari (1999–2003).

He has been co-director of the International Workshops “Frontiers of photonics, plasmonics and electronics with 2D nanosystems”, Erice, Italy (July 2018), and "Terahertz Science, Nanotechnologies and Applications", International School of Solid State Physics, Erice in 2016; chair of 100th National Congress of the Italian Physical Society (Applied Physics Section) in 2014; co-chair of the 11th International Conference on Intersubband Transitions in Quantum Wells (ITQW-2011), co-chair and president of the local organization committee of the “2nd International Workshop on Quantum Cascade Lasers”, Rosa Marina di Ostuni (Br), in 2006; member of the Program Committee of the 9th and 10th International Conference on Intersubband Transitions in Quantum Wells, Cumbria, U. K., in 2007, and Montreal, in 2009; director of the International School of INFM "Progress in laser sources and photonic devices", Capri, in 2002; co-chair of the symposia “Materials and devices for photonics” and “Progress and achievements in laser sources” of INFMeeting, in 2002 and 2004.

Gaetano Scamarcio has been the recipient of the following awards and fellowships: Award of the Italian Physical Society (1989), Firestone Prize for young laureates (1985), NATO-CNR Advanced Fellowship (1995), Ambassadorial Fellowship of the International Rotary Foundation (1994).

Married since 1991 he is father of Alessandro, born in 1993, and Vincenzo born in 1997.
